“A Fairy Tale”

For today, some fairy art…

“A Fairy Tale” is an oil on canvas painting by the English Symbolist artist, Mark Lancelot Symons. This piece was undated, but was likely painted sometime between 1925 and 1935, during Symons most productive art years.

Symons depicts a young girl who has fallen asleep on a bed of ground ivy that has crept onto some architectural stonework. As she sleeps, a whole group of fairies complete with wings gather around the sleeping girl, nestling themselves within the honeysuckle growing above. Some of the fairies have trumpets.

Symons did not paint full time until 1924 when his wife convinced him to. From 1925 until his death in 1935, Symons produced a large body of art that includes his most well-known pieces.

A Fairy Tale” is currently on display at the Newport Museum and Art Gallery in Newport, Wales.
