“A Summer Evening, Beaumont”
This oil on canvas painting, titled “A Summer Evening, Beaumont”, is by the French American Romantic landscape artist, Louis Aston Knight from circa 1920 to 1930. The setting for this painting is Beaumont-le-Roger, a small settlement in Normandy in northern France where Knight lived.
In 1919, Knight bought a brick and stone cottage in Beaumont-le-Roger. Inspired by Monet’s gardens in Giverny, Knight cultivated his own gardens to use for his art. He used the brook and gardens at his house as the subject for many of his paintings.
After the fall of France to the Germans in 1940, Knight and his wife moved to New York City. He would remain there for the rest of his life. In 1944, Knight’s house in Beaumont-le-Roger was unfortunately bombed by the US while trying to cut off a German retreat. This news shattered Knight who suffered a stroke from which he never really recovered.
“A Summer Evening, Beaumont” is currently in a private collection.
