Carl Nebel
Carl Nebel was a German artist, draftsmen, engineer, and architect who lived from 1805 to 1855. Nebel was born in Hamburg, Germany where he first studied art. After further studying in Paris, he moved to Mexico in 1829 and remained there until 1834. During this time, he created the pieces that he would publish in his tome on that country, titled Voyage pittoresque et archéologique dans la partie la plus intéressante du Méxique, which was published in 1836.
Carl Nebel’s book was so well revered that in 1851, he was hired to create more art to accompany a book on the Mexican American War titled The War Between the United States and Mexico, Illustrated. Nebel is mostly known for these battle works. The images were relatively accurate as Nebel had lived in Mexico for quite some time and had a good handle on the local culture and customs. Additionally, he did visit the locations of many of the battles after the fact. The biggest errors he made were generally in the background of the landscapes that he did not visit, as he had to rely on other people’s sketches to enhance his own.
Carl Nebel died on June 4, 1855 at just 50 years old while in Bologna, Italy.
