“Construction of the fort of Kharānaq”
“Construction of the fort of Kharānaq” is an intricate and visually rich ink and watercolor on paper Persian Miniature style painting. It was made by the Persian Afghani artist, Kamāl ud-Dīn Behzād, between 1495 and 1496.
Kharānaq is a significant mud brick village in modern day Iran that has been occupied for thousands of years. This miniature is from the ‘Iskandarnamah’. The ‘Iskandarnamah’ or The Book of Alexander is the Persian variant of the Alexander the Great legend.
Kamāl ud-Dīn Behzād was born in Herat in modern day Afghanistan. He is one of the most well-known artists of the Persian miniature style. Behzād exhibited his own unique style. He paid close attention to his overall composition. Behzād also introduced greater naturalism to Persian painting through the individuals he painted and the expressions, gestures, and physicality they employed.
“Construction of the fort of Kharānaq” is currently in the collections of the British Museum in London, England.
