“Far Away Thoughts”

“Far Away Thoughts” is a lovely oil on canvas painting by the English Neoclassical artist, John William Godward, from 1892. It exhibits typical Godward aspects; a woman in a studied pose wearing classical dress.

Godward’s style often gets confused as Pre-Raphaelite but was well rooted in the Neoclassical style. His aim was to recreate idyllic scenes of Classical Rome. Late in 1892, Godward created another oil painting to which he gave the same name. That one featured a classically dressed woman sewing in a landscape setting. Godward often made several versions of his work.

The model for this painting was likely Lily Pettigrew; one of two sisters who often sat for Godward. They were renowned for their beauty and modeled for several artists.
