“Indias de la Sierra al S. E. De Mexico”
This watercolor on paper illustration was drawn by the German artist, draughtsman, engineer, and architect, Carl Nebel and is titled “Indias de la Sierra al S. E. De Mexico”. It is from Nebel’s publication, ‘Voyage pittoresque et archéologique dans la partie la plus intéressante du Mexique’, originally published in 1836.
Nebel lived in Mexico for decades and since he was trained as an engineer and architect, his art was very precise. Especially for the time period, his artwork more accurately depicted the dress and colors of his subjects. As he did not embellish, these pictures offer a more authentic glimpse into the past.
The lithographic techniques used to convert Nebel’s original watercolor paintings into lithographs that were employed by the lithographer, Rose-Joseph Lemercier, were the top of the line during his day. The resulting effect looked almost like a painting, rather than a lithograph.
The original “Indias de la Sierra al S. E. De Mexico” painting is currently in a private collection.
