“Indias de la Sierra al S. E. De Mexico”

“Indias de la Sierra al S. E. De Mexico” is a watercolor on paper illustration by the German artist, draftsman, engineer, and architect, Carl Nebel. It is from Nebel’s publication, Voyage pittoresque et archéologique dans la partie la plus intéressante du Mexique, originally published in 1836.

Nebel lived and worked in Mexico for decades. Since he was trained as an engineer and architect, his art is very precise. Especially for the time period, his artwork more accurately depicted the dress and colors of his subjects. As he did not embellish, these pictures offer a more authentic glimpse into the past.

Joseph Lemercier was the lithographer that converted Nebel’s watercolor paintings into lithographs. The techniques he used were the top of the line during his day. The resulting effect looked almost like a painting, rather than a lithograph.

The original “Indias de la Sierra al S. E. De Mexico” painting is currently in a private collection.
