“Omnisciencia”
Mexican muralism…
This detail is from a fresco mural titled “Omnisciencia” by Mexican symbolism artist, José Clemente Orozco, from 1925. It was painted inside of the eighteenth-century palace, Casa de los Azulejos, or the House of Tiles, in Mexico City. This is one of Orozco’s earliest pieces, done when he had just recently entered his mural phase.
Orozco was a symbolist artist who was a leader of the Mexico muralist movement that spread across Mexico in the 1920s. This painting was commissioned by Francisco Sergio Iturbe, who was a major patron of the arts at this time. Orozco painted the mural along the wall at the bottom of the main stairway of the palace. It features a symbolic figure of Grace presiding over two masculine values with their feminine counterparts. The House of Tiles, or Casa de los Azulejos, was once the residence of the Counts of Orizaba Valley. Today, it is the location of the flagship restaurant for the Sanborn brothers.
“Omnisciencia” is currently on display at Casa de los Azulejos, the House of Tiles which is located on Callejón de la Condesa, between Madero Street and 5 de Mayo Street. Its official address is Francisco I, Madero 4, Centro Histórico, 06500 Ciudad de México, in Mexico City.
