“Rain in an Oak Forest”
This 1891 oil on canvas painting is by the Russian artist, Ivan Shishkin, and is called “Rain in an Oak Forest.” Shishkin lived just south of Saint Petersburg and painted many of his most well-known landscapes within the woods around his home. This is one of those pieces.
Shishkin’s goal was to depict, with complete honesty, the beauty and emotion found within the Russian countryside. He is associated with the Peredvizhniki movement, which was the Russian counterpart of the realism movement that was happening in France at the same time.
“Rain in an Oak Forest” is currently on display at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Russia.
