“The End of a Stiff Fight”
This ink on paper etching, titled “The End of a Stiff Fight“, is by the English–American artist, illustrator, and writer, Louis Rhead. It is an illustration on page 144 of a 1902 book that Rhead wrote and illustrated titled ‘The Speckled Brook Trout’.
Rhead was a well-respected and sought after artist for his entire career. He created a slew of Art Nouveau style decorative posters in the late nineteenth century. However, one of his favorite hobbies was fishing, both regular and fly fishing.
After spending several years trout fishing in the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York, In 1916, Rhead wrote and illustrated his book, American Trout-Stream Insects. It was the most comprehensive book on the subject at the time of its publication and furthered the field of entomology.
Between his 1902 and 1916 books, and right up until his death, Rhead consistently published articles on angling. His work is found in publications such as The American Angler, Outing Magazine, Field & Stream, and Forest and Stream.
