“The Small Meadows in Spring”
“The Small Meadows in Spring” is a lovely oil on canvas painting by the French-English impressionist artist, Alfred Sisley, from 1880. Sisley created several paintings from this vantage point along the Seine River.
In this piece, Sisley paints a wooded path that ran along the banks of the Seine. This spot on the river is between the villages of Veneux and By, just south of Paris, in the countryside of France. The village depicted on the other side of the river is Champagne. The young girl in the painting is Alfred Sisley’s then 12-year-old daughter, Jeanne. You can still access the path along the river today, only now it is paved.
Sisley painted this along with several other works showing the Veneux-Nadon countryside, where he lived. In 1880, financial hardships forced him to abandon the more expensive Paris suburbs for the French countryside.
“The Small Meadows in Spring” is currently on display at the Tate Britain in London, England.
