“Vino Cousiño Macul”
“Vino Cousiño Macul” is an Art Deco style color lithograph from circa 1925. This poster advertisement was made for the Cousiño Macul Winery in Chile by the French illustrator, René Vincent.
The poster is focused on a young woman in a stylish flapper dress. She is offering a sip of wine to her well-dressed companion depicted in a tuxedo on the very left. The woman’s hair is short, her earrings and necklace are long, and her bright yellow dress sports a low waistline and a grape print on the fabric.
The Cousiño-Macul Winery was established by Matías Cousiño in 1856 in the Macul region of Santiago, Chile, and is still in operation today. In 2006, the operation moved from Santiago to Buin, Chile, but remains in the hands of the 6th generation of the Cousiño family. This winery is the only nineteenth century winery from Chile still owned by the original family.
René Vincent created several advertisements for this company in the early part of the twentieth century, in addition to advertisements for several other wineries. Vincent’s Art Deco posters were quite popular and are some of his most well-known pieces today. He had developed his own style in which he used perspective to slightly distort the subjects, making them seem larger than life.
“Vino Cousiño Macul” is quite iconic and can be found gracing posters, t-shirts, and even cell phone cases. The original drawing is likely in a private collection.
